Accidents can happen . . .
As a volunteer the last thing you every want to have happen is for a youth member in your care or fellow leader to be injured. But from time to time accidents do happen. Of course the Boy Scout motto, "Be prepared" goes along way. Tour permit, permission slips, first aid kit, health history forms and location along with contact information of the nearest assistance are all things you as a leader would never go on an outing without knowing ahead of time.
In case you didn't know the Concho Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America carries Health, Accident and Sickness insurance on every REGISTERED youth and adult member as well as all potential members that attend any Scouting function. (This is provided thanks to your Family Friends of Scouting contributions.) This insurance is secondary coverage. Primary responsibility lies with any policy currently
enforced, carried on or by the member. But if no coverage is in effect then it becomes primary up to the limits of the policy.
At a council or district event you would simply report the mishap to the Council Staff member on site. They will help you with the process to make a claim as needed. If you find yourself on a unit activity then a phone call to your District Executive is the first step to take. A simple one page claim form can be requested from the Council Office.
But more important than what to do after an accident is preventing it in the first place. Reviewing the Guide to Safe Scouting or Tours and Expeditions publications are always a good precaution. Also the "Sweet 16 of Safety" is a good reminder of what should be foremost in mind when planning an activity.
In scouting, the Sweet 16 of Safety refers to 16 important safety principles that should be addressed in planning any scouting activity. These safety points embody good judgment and common sense to provide a prudent "Check List" to assure that you have adequate resources to make the event fun and safe.

ARROWCORPS5
The Order of the Arrow has had a long-standing interest in coordinating a national service project, utilizing the infrastructure and leadership established over many years of success at the Boy Scouts of America's high adventure bases. Working closely together, the United States Forest Service and the OA have chosen five project sites, spread across America that will be the focus of our combined efforts. ArrowCorps5 will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for each participant to set an example of leadership
in service to those who treasure our national forests.
Five thousand physically fit and able volunteers (determined by the "Philmont Weight Limits for Backpacking & Hiking"), made up of youth and adults, will participate. The national Order of the Arrow committee and key sponsors will fund the projects. Participants will pay a reasonable fee to help pay for accommodations, meals, and a full day of recreational activities
during the projects. Go to http://event.oa-bsa.org/ for more information.
