Anniversary Week Marks
90th Birthday

Scouts and Scouters in the Concho Valley Council will take part in Anniversary Week, February 6–12, highlighting the 90th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

Tuesday, February 8, marks the official anniversary celebration. It was on that date in 1910 that the BSA was formally organized in Washington, D.C.

In support of our national theme, “ Strong Values, Strong Leaders – Character Counts,” the theme for this year’s Anniversary Week, as well as for the entire year, is “Celebrating 90 Years of Strong Values and Leadership.”

A variety of special activities is planned to mark the week’s observance. Special religious observances will be held on Scout Sunday, February 6, and on Scout Sabbath, February 12.

The purposes of Scouting have not changed one bit over the years. We still strive to build character, instill ideals of good citizenship, and foster personal fitness in young people.

So mark your calendars now. Get ready to take pride in our past and plan for an even brighter future.

THE WOODBADGE

Woodbadge Advanced Adult Leader Training was initiated by the founder of Scouting, Robert S.S. Baden Powell as an intensive training experience for Boy Scout Leaders. Upon completion of this training, Baden Powell presented to each attendee a wooden bead from a necklace he had received during his campaign against the Zulus in Africa. Today Woodbadge stands as the premier Boy Scout Leader Training experience.

In the fall of 2000 the Comanche Trail Council will host Woodbadge Course SR-379. Course dates are August 26-27, September 8-10, and September 22-24. An informational meeting will be held prior to the course. Costs for the course will be $100.00-$120.00. Pre-registration is required by March 1, 2000. Contact the Concho Valley Council Service Center for more information.

Chavez Represents Texas Law Enforcement Explorers

Maria A. Chavez, the Patrol Explorer in charge of Del Rio Border Patrol Post 920 was among 29 Explorers chosen Nationally to attend the National Law Enforcement Explorer FBI Leadership Academy.

Chavez was the only Explorer representative from Texas. Attendees at the Leadership Academy received hands-on training from the FBI, Postal Inspection Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF), U.S. Customs, the Border Patrol, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. She also met with Brig. General David W. Foley, commanding general of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command. At the conclusion of the Academy Chavez was presented with an award from Jim Kaminski, the National Director of Law Enforcement Exploring.

Upon her return from the Academy, Maria issued a personal invitation to the youth of the Concho Valley to join exploring. "Experience the adventure of being an Explorer— the leadership, character and pride that will be developed, as well as the memories and friendships that will be formed will last forever,” she said.
