The Fire of an Arrowman

When the going got tough at the National Jamboree, who did the scouts call? - the OA Service Corps. Composed of 300 Arrowmen from across the nation, including all six national officers, this elite group of honor campers was ready for duty whenever and wherever needed. Their presence was evident from the beginning of Jamboree, when the Service Corps was called upon to relocate the Alaskan troop from their sub-camp. The mood during  this time was quite chilling, yet during this rough time the Service Corps stepped up and quickly aided their fellow scouts. The feelings of those helping pack the Alaskans's gear was quite insightful to the extent of the damage, "it was like looking at wreckage after a catastrophe on tv,, and yet unlike tv, it was real. You could not deny that this happened." - Anonymous Gulf Coast Arrowman. But the cheerful Service Corp, or men in blue, as they were called by some, because of their blue Columbia shirt uniforms, helped aid in the evacuation of scouts from the arena show, many of whom were suffering from dehydration. The Service Corps helped move ice water, transport scouts and visitors to medical areas, and assist medical technicians with IVs and medical attention as hundreds dropped in shear exhaustion from the extreme heat. The response of the Service Corps throughout the Jamboree, as Ben Hayishi of New York put it, "was simply amazing." The willingness of the Arrowment to selflessly serve, helped make the Jamboree a success, and helped reignite the fire in new and old Arrowment.  Look in 2009 for the Service Corps applications and you too could be one of the men in blue at the 2010 National Jamboree.

HOW TO GET THERE

AT THE H.E. BUTT FOUNDATION CAMP Enter and drive slowly on the narrow, caliche road for about one mile to the river. Yes! You drive in the river. The riverbed is solid rock - the water is about two-inches deep. Stone markers in the river mark the edge of the roadway. Follow the signs to your destination.
